Many can argue that technology has changed the world for better or worse. But when it comes to the real estate business, technology has undoubtedly benefited from techological advances, especially in this era of COVID-19. The question is, will the real estate business go back to "normal" when the pandemic blows over?
It's hard to give a proper answer because we don't know. The world is in a state of unknown, and people are using technology more than ever. Technology brings a sense of efficiency to businesses. For example, for a homebuyer that is busy in the working world, it may be hard to set up a time to sign papers for their new home. But with technology, that same homebuyer can easily e-sign during their lunch break at work. Some homebuyers have to move quick and can't see a home in person before placing an offer, which is where online listings come in. Now, many real estate agents are offering 3D virtual tours or even Facetime, Zoom or Skype tours where the agent takes you through the house via video chat. Aspects such as e-signing and Facetime tours used to only be used for extenuating circumstances, but now it's becoming the new normal.
Some people love this new normal, saying that it's making homebuying easier, faster and safer. Because of the Coronavirus, many homebuyers don't want to travel and view homes as it can put them at risk, so online tours, consulations and signings helps ease home-buying induced anxiety. However, some don't like this new normal, saying that there's more to buying a home than just viewing the home itself. You have to get a feel for your neighborhood, city, school districts, and so on. The good thing is, technology can help with that too!
