Prep Your Home for Spring

As the snow melts and puddles form, you know winter is done. Even though us Michiganders may have a few more weeks (hopefully not more) of winter left, it’s best to start preparing your home for spring sooner rather than later. Let’s get to that spring cleaning and freshen up our homes for better weather ahead!

Cleaning windows is often something homeowners put off or forget to do. In the winter, windows protect your home from the cold and get dust, dirt and salt from the roads thrown at them. Cleaning both the insides and outsides of your windows will make your home look cleaner and brighter. While you’re at it, put a fresh coat of paint on those window trims and change up your window treatments for something more light and airy, depending on the interior style of your house.

Many homeowners also forget to clean their gutters. As gross as it is, dirty gutters lessen your homes curb appeal and can cause damage to the house. Doing this takes minimal effort; just use a ladder, rake, and a hose and make sure you have someone spotting you to ensure your safety. If you’re selling your home, buyers will appreciate clean gutters because it shows that if you can take care of those, you can take care of the rest of your house!

Adding fresh decor like flowers or potted and hanging plants will bring a nice pop of color into your home, which is nice after a dark and gloomy winter. Along with making your house smell great, plants also produce oxygen and are known as natural air purifiers!

Once the snow melts away, lawns can be left looking muddy and yellow. Fertilize and aerate your lawn to make it lush and green. Rake leaves or any debris, trim your trees and bushes, and plant new colorful flowers. Curb appeal is everything!

The winter can cause a lot of stress on your roof. Check to make sure there are no damages to your roof that can cause leaks. Treat your roof if you find mold or moss, or replace your roof if needed. Many roofing companies will have discounts in the spring for this reason.

Decluttering your home is one of the best things to do once spring hits. Pack away your bulky winter clothing and replace it with your spring clothes. Do a deep clean by dusting, sweeping and vacuuming as well as disinfecting any surfaces. Donate clothing, toys, books, furniture, or anything you don’t use anymore to those who do need it, or have a garage sale! Getting rid of the clutter, as well as following these other tips, will help you feel as light and bright as the spring weather!
